What is aluminum carbide?
Aluminum carbide is an ionic compound with a rhombic hexahedron structure, which has high hardness, shear strength and melting point, making it an ideal second phase strengthening material for aluminum base materials. Aluminum carbide is an inorganic compound with the molecular formula Al4C3. Yellow or green-gray crystalline mass or powder with hygroscopicity. Decomposed at high temperature and hydrolyzed to methane and aluminum hydroxide in cold water. Used in metallurgy and catalyst. Aluminum carbide golden yellow hexagonal sheet crystal. Preparation method of aluminum carbide:
It is made by the reaction of alumina with coke. Aluminum carbide Al4C3 is prepared by the direct combination of two elemental substances at high temperatures.
A mixture of 1 part heavy soot-black and 6 parts heavy aluminum powder was prepared. The mixture was moistened with pine essential oil, placed in a tight layer in a clay crucible, and covered with a layer of toner. The cauldron should be covered with a lid and all crevices covered with refractory clay mixed with asbestos fibers. Then, the crucible containing the mixture is placed in the oven for pre-drying, and the mixture is burned at a temperature of not less than 1200℃ for 30min. Higher temperatures make the reaction go better. After cooling, the product is treated with dilute hydrochloric acid (or an alkaline solution) under cooling to remove excess aluminum. The aluminum carbide prepared as the fine crystalline powder was washed with water to remove aluminum chloride, and then quickly washed off with alcohol. The product was dried in a drying oven at 80 ~ 90℃. The product contains a large amount of aluminum nitride.
When the mixture of the calculated amount of aluminum and smoke black is calcined in hydrogen, pure products without aluminum nitrite can be prepared. This calcination should be carried out at 1800 ~ 1900℃ for 2 ~ 3h. The resulting product is ground fine and calcined again at the above temperature.
At present, the main preparation methods of AlC include direct metal carbonization, carbothermal reduction, sol-gel Chemicalbook, microwave synthesis and high energy mechanical ball running-in. Metal direct carbonization method and carbothermal reduction method are the earliest synthetic methods, and some of the techniques have been applied in industrial production. However, the disadvantages of these two methods are high synthesis temperature, long reaction time and large particle size of the obtained powder. However, in the known high-energy ball running-in method, the focus is mainly on the in-situ synthesis of a small amount of AlC to enhance the aluminum-based materials, rather than the high purity synthesis of AlC. At the same time, the high-energy ball mill itself has a long ball milling time, energy consumption, powder particles are not uniform and other shortcomings.
